The New Nature - 36"/48" oil on canvas.

My paintings strive to position the city in the larger context of nature, since almost every city was founded by water, in the midst of ample farmland, or in a strategic high point nature shapes our ambitions. There is perhaps something utopian in my work, but I seek to excavate our recent history to find a way forward, rather than imposing the fetish of the new.

Exhition in Toronto - La Parete Gallery

    Christian McLeod Lost at Sea

Closer to home, I am very excited to be exhibiting at La Parete Gallery, 1086 Bathurst Street, Toronto. Gallery director Cosmo Barranka has been exhibiting leading Canadian artists since 1975, and this is a great opportunity for me to show my work alongside the earlier generation of Canadian artists who have been such a great influence on me, such as Paul-Emile Borduas, Richard Gorman, and William Ronald.

I will be holding a solo show at La Parete this coming November, but in the meantime there is a selection of my work available for viewing at the gallery, including 'Going Home' (2005), 'Lost at Sea' (2010) and 'Particles Triptych' (2009). For more information, contact Cosmo at La Parete Gallery - info@laparetegallery.com

    Crystal

As those of you who came out to my open studio last November will recall, I have recently completed a major work entitled 'Crystal (Halifax)' (shown above) which is the largest work I have made to date, measuring 96 x 60 inches. I am happy to announce that 'Crystal' and the related works depicting the same subject have arrived at Gallery Page and Strange in Halifax and can be viewed by appointment. There are five paintings in the series, which can also be viewed online at my website.

    LUCKY @ Green Shag

    Lucky the Chicken

    Christian McLeod Lucky the Chicken

Christian McLeod Tommy Douglas Together with Victoria McPhedran from Green Shag, I have spent the summer developing a fun, ironic and iconic line of multiples entitled Lucky. This is an extension of my stencil-based My Blue Canoe series. The images chosen for Lucky - Tommy Douglas, the chicken and the egg - are deliberately ambiguous, humorous, and playful. I chose the colours as an homage to the social political protest posters of the 1930's and 40's. The works use the methods of propaganda but resist a simple reading.

I will be exhibiting new work at Green Shag for the Queen West Art Crawl, with an opening night party on September 17th, 2010. Please RSVP to confirm attendance. The full press release for the exhibition can be read at the official Lucky website.
